The advanced technology employed in the development of CCN, which significantly differs from conventional "color management," is based on a proven technology that has served the commercial print producers for decades. Unlike color management systems in the last decade, this one provides dramatic improvements to the industrial de facto standard technology while at the same time providing advantages in resolving the multitude print variable combinations.
The concepts of "Density", "Percent Dot Area", and "Tone-Reproduction" are unsurpassed excellent tools when used in a more highly-developed and refined concept than in prior art; they are considerably more fitting to the ways of the advertising print business. After all, print medium practitioners and the trade associations, universities and vendors working inextricably with them developed these tools.
A patent (US6725772) granted to CCN on the technology is one of the most important aspects of the CCN system.
Simply put, the patent teaches a method of quantifying the differences between the System Admixture characteristics of a proofing system and a printing device (press). These characteristics, isolated from and independent of tone-reproduction characteristics, can best be described as the "color effect irregularities of superimposing C, M, Y, and K ink images". The patent also provides methods for calculating correction factors and methods for these correction factors to be applied in a similar way to applying transfer curves for Tone Reproduction control, except that it takes 32 curves instead of the usual 4 to which we are traditionally accustomed. This has never been possible before in prior art and it is surprising how important it is in being able to predict color on press.
A patent (US7148995) granted to CCN teaches a robust method for computing Tone Reproduction corrections specifically required when the targeted solid densities for a press are variable from form-to-form depending on the System Admixture characteristic differences between the Press Profile and the Proofing System Profile.
Another pending CCN patent application (US60/641,626) has to do with an extraordinarily powerful Color Image Transformation Engine specifically designed to transform files with the unique correction factors of the CCN proprietary technology.
A fundamental uniqueness of this "color printing system" is that it was created by print medium practitioners, for practitioners, with full recognition that the practice of high volume commercial printing is much more of an art than a science. New and improved tools can always be used to enhance and manage the art but it may always remain an art. The participants' creative capacity is always the major factor in the quality of the final results. Even when the technical endeavor is near perfect, without great creative design, illustration, photography, copywriting, and other creative aspects, the job is mediocre at best.
