On CCN promotional and advertising booklets, such as the "What you don't know about CMYK", where "traditional commercial printing" is compared to "CCN Printing", how exactly were the files and reproduction done for each process?

What is the innovation behind CCN?

Simply put, CCN looks at high-density 4/C process printing from a revolutionary perspective gained from decades of printing science and printing experience using conventional and traditional methods. To reconcile the visual disparity between the outputs of a proofing system and an offset press, CCN developed patented and patent pending processes to characterize and factor in a greater number of print parameters specific to each press form. These variable and interdependent print parameters span the proofing system, production proof, actual press, real-time press conditions, paper, and CCN's specially formulated highly saturated inks.

What are the overall advantages of CCN?

Using CCN's web-based arsenal of tools and CCN inks, it is possible for existing presses to print at higher than traditional densities without experiencing the errors normally associated with high-density printing.

CCN's 256 individual correction coeffeciants embedded in a 32 curve set allow greater control on each CMYK plate, including dot gain compensation and a CMYK color space segmented into seven inter-mixing color families, to increased tonal ranges by as much as 33% to 48%.

Printed material comes off press accurately matching the intense, high-fidelity color visible on the CCN-characterized digital halftone proof, without compromise to flesh tones, subtle neutrals, sepia tones or other effects, for high-impact print advertising, promotional and publication visual communications.

The seamless control and validation process assures maximum accuracy in prepress, reduces make-ready errors, and allows the craftsman precision 4/C control on press.

CCN closes the production loop, allowing key people to collaborate, remotely proof, control and validate print parameters, and communicate approvals throughout all phases of a print job.

The web-based service enables consistent quality, high-density printing using multiple presses or multiple printers across geographic boundaries.

What is the CCN system?

CCN is available to printers, prepress professionals, print buyers, publishers, creative agencies, in-house agencies or individuals by subscription to a cost-effective, easy-to-implement and use web-based service.

Briefly, the service provides access and the tools to use CCN's comprehensive system of color control administration; which combines patented and patent pending printing process methodology with robust software technology and a database of print parameters characterizations. Currently, the database stores characterization profiles for the Kodak Approval halftone digital proofing system; over 1,100 papers; specific offset presses at subscribed printing companies; and CCN's specially formulated inks. More data continues to be added to the database. The system also provides tools to remotely proof and track approvals and enhance collaboration across multiple organizations.

High-fidelity 4/C process printing is accurately and consistently achieved by controlling the print production process through CCN, using CCN-characterized proofs, presses, papers and inks.

Why should I subscribe to CCN?

The technology behind Color Control Network has already been proven on commercial print projects with outstanding results. CCN's innovative, systematic method for making each production proof the new standard for desired color intensity is winning over a growing number of printers, print buyers, publishers and creative groups whose clients demand high-impact visual communications that stand out in print.

On CCN promotional and advertising booklets, such as the "What you don't know about CMYK", where "traditional commercial printing" is compared to "CCN Printing", how exactly were the files and reproduction done for each process?

Printing industry professionals are well aware of the added obstacles and difficulties in printing with long range and extreme high densities when done the traditional way. Printing with high density is not a new concept. What is brand new, and only from CCN, is a method and tools to execute the process easily and predictably.

For the "traditional commercial printing" process images, the files were prepared in the most commonly used method which is to use the commercial printing "de facto SWOP standard" ink hues, dot gain, and total-printing specifications. Key exceptions to the official SWOP standard are that the solid densities are higher as per "GRACOL", the screen ruling is finer (175 lpi, approx.) and the choice of paper is not a publication stock but a high quality premium coated sheet. Additional reproduction parameters are as follows:
I.Proofed on Kodak Approval to commercial printing's "de facto SWOP standard"
II. Kodak Prinergy Harmony Curves to compensate for press dot gain characteristics
III.High quality standard generally available process inks

For the "CCN Printing" file preparation and reproduction process the starting point was the files prepared above, in their state prior to the application of the "additional reproduction parameters". The following modifications on the files, all made with CCN software application and plug-in tools, and reproduction process were made to accommodate the CCN process as follows:
I. "Push To CCN Range" Photoshop plug-in
II. "Virtual Depth" PhotoShop plugin
III. Proofed on Kodak Approval to CCN specifications
IV. System Admixture compensation
V. Dynamic Tone Reproduction compensation
VI. CCN Certified Ink set
See CCN's "Comprehensive Information Manual", downloadable in PDF from CCN Manual (PDF), for detailed information on the the above processes.

Both "traditional commercial printing" and "CCN Printing" were plated on "Kodak Thermal Gold" plates, printed on a Heidelberg 640 CD press, on "Appleton's Utopia Premium 150 lb. cover gloss" paper, with aqueous coating.
